Type designers often try to make analogies between fonts and people or other objects, for example “if fonts were humans” or “dogs as typefaces“. Mary Huang took this idea one step further, she created a software that turns your face into a font. Basically, what this program does is to translate your facial dimensions to turn it into a custom font. Check out the project on this page.

One of my favorite aspects of design in general is that it helps to improve the most commons items of our daily life. The following electric plugs and concepts illustrate this quite well, they all try to improve the usability and/or the look-and-feel of an appliance we use every day.

1. Plug & Play

Infographics are visual illustrations communicating information by means of signs, symbols, icons, maps and diagrams. When these graphics are animated they can be used to represent complex situations and tell stories, or they can address social comment, satire and subversion. At their best, infographics in motion can be informative, involving, funny and at times surprisingly touching. This post brings together fourteen examples of these stunning animations.

1. Grand Tour of the Known Universe

This is a truly awesome infographic animation revealing the scale of the known universe in relation to our home planet. Astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History have mapped and constantly update and maintain the Digital Universe Atlas, a four-dimensional map of the cosmos, created using the latest scientific data. Based on this map, the movie takes the viewer on a mesmerising voyage from the Himalayas to the furthest reaches of known space and time, with every galaxy, star, planet, moon and satellite accurately scaled and positioned according to current knowledge.

Handwritten Fonts

Typography is possibly one of the most important design aspects of any project; using typography that doesn’t compliment your design can be incredibly detrimental to the design and effect usability and obviously the aesthetic properties of the project. There are thousands of fonts from many foundries available, as well as custom fonts that people wish to create and share. Common sense will tell us that the paid fonts will be of a much higher quality, and have the full character sets but there of course exceptions to the rule. (Museo and Chunk are a couple of great examples.)
With every element of design there are trends. One typography trend that we have seen quite a bit, is of handwritten fonts. This style can be used in many ways, for example client testimonials, signatures and in grunge designs. I have gathered 15 handwritten fonts that particularly stand out for me; the notable part worth mentioning is they are all free. But please do read the usage rights regarding commercial designs and projects.

March was a busy month in my Vector Character land. I had at least 5 days where I was totally stumped and had to sit for half an hour to collect my thoughts. I wonder if the inspiration gets harder to come by as the days progress. I find creating the vector characters quite a breeze, but the stories keep getting harder to come by. I almost gave up several times and thought of just making the characters and not attaching a fun little story to each and every one of them. But then, that would be giving up right? And we just can’t have that!

Some Things I Learnt This Month

  • It is alright to not have detailed eyes every single time. I have now experimented with different shaped eyes and eyes that are just small, non-consequential dots and they have ended making my characters appear different and more involved in the stories I create for them. See Mono & Big Lou
  • I experimented with lack of facial features like eyes and nose and even mouth. I supplemented the lack of features by posture and body movement to express an emotion. See Hi Yai Yai & Pug
  • I tried out unusual proportions and loved it! I love the big head over a small body look. See Polka
  • In the past I have always thought of a storyline first before developing the character. This month, I took to Illustrator several times, playing with shapes and coming up with characters. Once they were created, I would stare at them for a while, willing my mind to conjure up names and stories, even trying to fit them into previous storylines. See Papa & Eko.
